Outdoor Living

(ARA) – Instead of spending on pricey vacations, more Americans are turning to money-saving alternatives in their own backyards. Upgrading or adding a deck is a great way to take advantage of outdoor living spaces.

Homeowners today are viewing their outdoor living space as extensions of their home. Among the 40 million homeowners who have an available outdoor living space, less than one-third prep their decks appropriately for the season, according to a Glidden brand survey. If you’re planning on using your outdoor living space this season, you may want to consider improving or upgrading your current deck.

Although it now may seem like a challenging time to invest in your home, enhancing your outdoor living space can be cost-effective. Exterior and replacement projects bring homeowners the best return on investment, according to Remodeling Magazine’s annual Cost vs. Value report.

“Outdoor living has become an increasingly popular trend over the last few years,” says Stephen McNally, vice president of sales and marketing for TAMKO Building Products, Inc. “When selecting your future decking material, research all of your options to ensure you’re purchasing material that best meets your needs.”

When making a decision on your available decking options, you may want to consider the three common types of decking material:

Composite
Representing 40 to 60 percent of new decks, composite decking is the latest trend in outdoor living spaces. Composite decking is made from a blend of woods and recycled plastic, vinyl or acrylic materials that prolong the life of the deck. Although the initial price of composite decking may be higher compared to other types of wood, the expected lifespan can save money in the long run.

Many homeowners are attracted to composite decking because it provides the appearance of real wood, requires little maintenance and typically comes with a longer warranty period. For example, TAMKO’s EverGrain is backed by a 25-year limited warranty.

“Composite decking requires no painting or staining which allows homeowners to spend more time enjoying their decks rather than working to maintain them,” says McNally.

Pressure-treated
Pressure-treated wood contains preservatives that provide protection against termites, insects and fungal decay. The wood product is placed into a depressurized cylinder. The cylinder is filled with preservatives under high pressure that forces them deeply into the wood. When the process ends, the cylinder is drained and the remaining preservative is reused. Applying preservatives is an attempt to slow drying which means less shrinkage occurs and the surface of the wood remains smoother longer.

Although pressure-treated wood is usually found at relatively low cost, it is at high risk for moisture damage. In order to protect a pressure-treated deck against weather and premature aging, the wood requires regular power washing and yearly application of stain and sealer.

Cedar
Cedar is another commonly used decking material because it is attractive, easy to work with and is naturally rot- and insect-resistant. Cedar wood decking material has less than half the swelling and shrinking tendencies of other domestic softwoods.

If cedar wood goes untreated, over time it will lose its natural golden hue and may turn a silver grey color. The average lifespan of cedar is roughly 10 years and, in order to double the lifespan, regular applications of staining and waterproofing are highly recommended.

When you’re ready to begin creating or improving your outdoor living space, research your options. Be sure you’re picking the best available material to ensure your deck will last you many more summer months to come.

Tips and Tricks for Adding Curb Appeal to Your Landscape

Curb Appeal How To

Curb Appeal How To

(ARA) – You only get one chance for your home to make a first impression. With a little help from Mother Nature, you can demand a second look from passersby with a show-stopping front yard.

“Every canvas needs to start fresh and clean,” says James A. Baggett, editor of Country Gardens Magazine. “So roll up your sleeves, stick your hands in the dirt and get ready to personalize your yard with color and style.”

With a little ingenuity you can transform a ho-hum landscape into a real stunner with these simple tips that add professional-looking curb appeal to your home:

* First things first
You can’t enhance anything until you have a clean slate. So mow the lawn, get rid of the weeds, rake up and dispose of any leaves, edge the sidewalks and remove the grass growing between concrete seams and brick pavers. Prune the trees — especially the ones near or touching the roof — and add a layer of dark, natural mulch to any flower beds or under trees.

* Cover up the bald spots
Now you need to take a good look at your yard. How can you enhance your best features and minimize your worst? Here’s a great trick: Print photos in black and white and you’ll easily see the problem areas. Determine what “flaws” you want to fix. To update your look, fill empty spaces and add interest to a drab corner or “hide” unsightly spots with colorful, ever-blooming plants like the very popular shrub roses in The Knock Out family.

* Put out the welcome mat
The entry garden is the most visible garden space and sets the mood for your entire home. Whether formal or relaxed, it should draw your eye toward the front door. Plant a pair of carefully pruned boxwoods on either side of the front door to add symmetry. Add a light fixture that matches the home’s exterior and shows your personal taste.

* Contain yourself
For those with minimal or no yard, or if you just want the elegance and ease of containers, pot up pretty annuals and perennials around your entrance, mailbox or along the front walk. To have striking color year after year, use perennials for fistfuls of continuous blooms that help stretch your dollars. Yellow and red are hot colors this year so plant the newest Sunny Knock Out rose paired with your favorite red annuals to be in step with the latest trends.

* Express yourself
Decorate a garden with a favorite antique, treasured collectible or statue. Look for objects such as driftwood, rocks or even empty mailboxes to punctuate certain areas. Use color to attract the eye. Paint your front door a bold, welcoming color or try a bright, punchy color on the shutters.

* Plan for sustainability
Look for plants that are easy to grow, save water and don’t require a lot of work. Pick plants that are native to your area for low-maintenance beauty. Eco-friendly shrub roses are a great choice, especially when paired with perennials for year-round color.

Baggett thinks shrub roses are perfect for first-time homeowners since they are extremely easy to grow and are low-maintenance. “Shrub roses give you a lot of bang for your buck,” he says. “They are really no work for the homeowner — and don’t require spraying, harsh chemicals, pruning, deadheading or lots of water. They bloom from May to the first hard frost in the late fall, offering season-long color and visual impact in the home landscape.”

The most popular shrub roses are The Knock Out Family of roses. They are available in seven shades ranging from hot raspberry pink to soft yellow, fitting any homeowner’s taste and landscape style while providing continuous year-round curb appeal.

Enjoy the days you get outside to renew your yard and garden. You’ll have folks taking a second look.

Explore Local Treasures

Explore Local Treasures

(ARA) – With a down economy and the potential for higher gas prices this summer, many Americans are looking to take a more budget-friendly trip. Taking a “staycation,” instead of a traditional vacation, is a great option to save money. A staycation means you spend your vacation exploring what your city, county and state have to offer instead of traveling far and spending an excessive amount of money.

Many state and county parks and recreation sites offer the opportunity to go kayaking, canoeing, sailing, biking and fishing, or just rent a cabin and relax. To find what your area has to offer, simply conduct an online search for your state’s tourism department. This will reveal all the travel destinations and activities available to you, so you can best plan your staycation this summer.

Bringing essential gear with you instead of buying or renting it when you reach your destination is another way to save money. Make a list of needed supplies, including food items, clothing and other gear you’ll need and pack your vehicle ahead of time.

If you’re hauling kayaks, a boat or any other large recreation items, you’ll need to use your pickup. Your truck bed is a great place to store items during your road trip, but you’ll want to make sure those items are protected from the elements and prying eyes. One way to protect your gear is with a roll-up truck bed cover.

These affordable roll-up covers are easy to install and will give you 100 percent bed usage for hauling your gear. You simply roll up the cover to retrieve items in your truck bed. A high quality and budget-friendly option is the Access Roll-Up Cover, manufactured by ACI (Agri-Cover, Inc.), a North Dakota truck accessory company.

This soft roll-up cover is made of heavy-duty, double-coated vinyl material that holds up to the elements and numerous years of use in all different weather conditions. The roll-up cover installs quickly and easily with a clamp-on installation and is designed specifically to fit your truck model. When not in use, the cover can be rolled up behind the cab and never has to be removed when hauling your gear, making it a great option for your summer road trip.

A truck bed cover can also provide you with immediate gas mileage improvement, which may come in handy as gas prices tend to increase during the summer. A truck bed cover will help you save at the pump by reducing drag and making your vehicle more aerodynamic at high speeds. Most truck owners can see as much as a 10 percent increase in their fuel economy.

One Access Cover owner found the truck bed cover to come in very handy while on vacation. “Incredibly well made and functional product. If I would have carried a dozen of these with me on vacation I could have sold them all,” says Mike C. of Carpentersville, Ill.

For more information on the Access Roll-Up Cover or the Access Roll-Up Cover & Rack, visit www.agricover.com or call (888) 874-7205.

Smart ways summer travelers can cut hotel costs

Save On Travel

Save On Travel

(ARA) – How does your family plan to save money on summer vacation this year?  Driving rather than flying?  Maybe carrying all the items you need instead of renting once arriving at your destination?  These are all great ways to save!  But how do you cut back on one of the biggest, yet totally necessary costs of travel – accommodations?

After airfare (which many travelers are eschewing in favor of less costly motoring), accommodations can be the largest cost associated with summer travel. Short of staying with nearby family (too much togetherness for some of us) or popping a pup tent at the local campground (roughing it isn’t for everyone), how can you cut accommodation costs?

Here are a few helpful hints for both families and business people traveling this summer:

* Stick with a suite deal – If you’re traveling with more than three people in your party, there’s a lot to be said for staying in a suite, from both a cost and comfort standpoint. Suites offer room for larger parties and one suite in a quality hotel can be more cost-effective than booking multiple rooms in a budget property.

Factor in the free extras that come with a suite at a quality brand like Embassy Suites, and the savings can add up further. You’ll save money on food and beverage at Embassy Suites because they offer a free cooked-to-order breakfast every morning and your favorite beverages at an evening Manager’s Reception.

* Timing is everything – If you’re traveling on business, you may not have much flexibility on timing. Still, it’s wise to avoid traveling to a destination during a well-attended festival or event – unless, of course, your business is connected to the event. For leisure travelers, a wiser course might be to choose your destination based on attractions and proximity to home, and then book travel during times when demand is likely to be lower.

Every destination has a “shoulder season” – a time when fewer people are looking to book rooms. Check with the hotel you’re interested in, or the area convention and visitors bureau, to find out when lower demand times occur. You can sometimes save substantially by traveling at those times.

* You’ve earned your rewards – Sign up for travel rewards programs. Look for programs that allow you to move points between accounts. For example, some airlines and hotel chains have programs that award you extra points for traveling with their partners or allow you to apply their points toward travel with their partners. Your points accumulate value faster with these types of programs.

* Shop smart – Comparison shopping is easier than ever thanks to the Internet. Numerous Web sites allow you to quickly find great deals, check out nearby attractions and even create a full travel itinerary. Once you’ve found a great online deal, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone, call the hotel and ask someone there if they can do better than the advertised online rate. If they can’t lower the rate, they may be able to throw in some extra incentives like discount coupons to nearby attractions or even a complimentary meal in the hotel’s restaurant.

Does your housecat need a behavioral housecall? Help is here

Feline Harmony

Feline Harmony

(ARA) – Cats have earned the title of America’s favorite pet in part because they outnumber dogs in households across the country, but it could also be because their quirky personalities make life interesting.

More often than not, you’ll find that your cat’s entertaining antics leave you wondering, “What could she possibly be thinking?” You may never have all the answers, but one of the keys to living a more connected life with your cat starts with understanding.

“Cats can come across as complex because they can’t verbalize what they are feeling,” says Dr. Katrina Warren, host of “Housecat Housecall” presented by Purina Cat Chow. “That’s why it’s up to us to decode what’s going on in their minds, so we have a better idea of what they are trying to tell us through their actions.”

If you find yourself in a feline quandary, you’re not alone. Plenty of cat lovers – and there are at least 82 million housecats in the U.S., according to the American Veterinary Association – are looking for ways to bring harmony into their cat-owning households. Hence the success of shows like “Housecat Housecall,” a reality-based program featuring real cats, real people and real answers, returning to Animal Planet for its second season.

“Sometimes cats act out in response to changes happening in their homes that alter their daily routine,” Dr. Warren says. “Life-changing experiences like having a new baby or moving into a new home can have a huge impact on cat owners, but they can also mean big adjustments for their cats. The goal is to achieve a well-balanced life for both you and your cat, and sometimes that means getting advice from a professional.”

On the show, which airs Saturdays and Sundays, Dr. Warren and her team of cat experts equip cat owners with the tools and knowledge they need to work towards a lasting solution that ensures both the cat and owner are getting the most out of the life they share. Dr. Warren provides answers to some common cat care questions:

Preparing Your Cat for the Arrival of a New Baby

* Make changes to the cat’s routine in advance. If you are no longer going to allow your cat to enter certain rooms or sleep on your bed, start making those changes now.

* Allow your cat to smell the new smells associated with the baby such as powder and wipes well in advance.

* Make sure flea and worm control is up to date. A check up by your vet is a good idea while you have the time. Trim claws in advance of baby arriving.

* Obtain a recording of a baby crying and play this regularly at home so puss gets used to the new sounds prior to the arrival of the real thing.

Managing a Multi-cat Household

Cats generally prefer independent living, but not necessarily solitary living. Owners should respect the living arrangements that the cats establish and not force interactions.
It’s essential to supply each cat with her own “resources”, which include a feeding area, bowl, bed and scratching post. Have one litter box for each cat, plus one extra in the house.
Make sure you provide areas to climb, toys for play and safe places to hide or sit such as tunnels or high perches.

Find the time to give each cat some individual love and attention each day.

Keeping Cats Happy Indoors

Cats are much safer living indoors. They are not exposed to the dangers of infectious diseases, predators or motor vehicles. Most cats are happy indoors, but you must create an enriched environment.

* Provide a climbing tower and at least one scratching post. Cats love rooms with a view and a few high spots to survey their domains.

* Give them lots of cat toys – furry ones, colored ones, jingly ones and rolling ones as well as tunnels and boxes to play in.

* Bring the outdoors indoors with a pot of “cat grass” available at most nurseries.

Finally, Dr. Warren advises, look for help when tackling situations with your cat. Consult your veterinarian, talk to friends and gather information. Tune in to “Housecat Housecall” presented by Purina Cat Chow, to watch Dr. Warren and her team visit homes across the country helping cat owners address everything from a boisterous cat with lots of energy to more complex matters like helping a once outdoor cat adjust to an indoor lifestyle.  The show airs on Animal Planet Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. EDT/PDT and 8 a.m. EDT/PDT on Sundays, starting June 6.  For credible advice beyond the show, visit housecathousecall.com where you can pose your individual feline questions to a team of cat care specialists and view all of the webisodes from season one.

Summer travel tips

Before Your Leave

Before Your Leave

(ARA) – With the summer travel season upon us, people are looking for ways to have fun and get the most out of their trip, while staying within budget.

Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil car and co-owner of the Kevin Harvick Inc. race teams, spends a lot of his time traveling from racetrack to racetrack. Throughout the years, he’s gained a lot of knowledge and experience in managing his travel budget.

“We are on the road at least 34 weeks out of the year, so keeping travel costs down is imperative to keeping a balanced budget, but it’s not always just about finding the lowest price,” said Harvick. “There are a lot of different things we do to get the most out of every dollar, from planning travel routes and fuel stops ahead of time, to performing regular maintenance on the haulers and using payment options that help save money.”

One example is the Shell Saver Card(SM), where drivers can save five cents per gallon on Shell fuel purchases through June 30 and two cents after that. Plus, the card links directly to a checking account so it doesn’t impact consumer credit scores.

Another thing to keep in mind when traveling is that using high-quality gasoline helps protect and clean critical engine parts, which helps drivers get the most out of every drop. Harvick also recommends using the Shell FuelStretch tips.

“Practicing the FuelStretch tips helps conserve fuel, save money and stay within budget without sacrificing quality,” said Harvick.

* Drive smoothly
Avoid heavy acceleration or braking. Speeding, rapid acceleration and braking can lower your gasoline mileage by 5 percent at lower speeds around town and by 33 percent at highway speeds.

* Keep your engine well-tuned and repair any problems immediately
If your car has failed an emissions test or is noticeably out of tune, repairing the problem could improve your gasoline mileage by 4 percent on average.

* Make sure tires are not over or under-inflated
Proper air pressure cuts down on fuel used while driving. Keeping tires at the correct pressure can improve gasoline mileage by more than 3 percent.

* Minimize vehicle drag
Keep your trunk and back seat clear of unnecessary items that only add weight. Removing excess weight can improve your gasoline mileage.

* Use the recommended grade of oil in your engine
Following your manufacturer’s motor oil recommendation can improve gasoline mileage by up to 2 percent.

* Choose a high-quality gasoline
Top automakers say that carbon deposits can build up on critical engine parts, which can decrease the power, performance and fuel efficiency of your vehicle and recommend using TOP Tier Detergent Gasolines. All Shell gasolines meet TOP Tier standards and stop gunky build-up on critical engine parts to help vehicles perform at their best.

* Use cruise control on major roads and in free-flowing traffic
Maintaining a constant speed can improve gasoline mileage.

* Avoid idling
When you idle, you get zero miles per gallon.

* Avoid higher speeds
Gasoline mileage usually decreases when driving at speeds over 60 miles per hour.

* Plan your outings to avoid separate trips
Combine your errands into one outing to avoid short separate trips.

* Use payment options that save money
Payment cards offer a simple way to pay for things quickly, but they can also save you money.

How to give your old car a new look

Auto Remodels

Auto Remodels

(ARA) – You don’t have to buy a new car or truck to get a new look. Through the use of special products and accessories, drivers can transform the appearance of their vehicles quickly, easily and affordably.

According to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), there are literally thousands of specialty parts that can give an older vehicle a completely new appearance. Whether the goal is to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, or simply to give a vehicle a fresh, new look, a few simple steps is all it may take.

Start with the interior. There are countless products available to update the inside of a vehicle, including aftermarket control knobs and steering wheels, seat covers, wood grain or carbon fiber instrument panels and dash kits. It’s easy and inexpensive to get a new cover for a steering wheel, or you can spend a bit more to replace it entirely with a more sporty or luxurious one. Custom steering wheels come in a variety of shapes and styles, and are available in different materials such as wood, leather or high-tech plastics.

Similarly, seat covers are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and are one of the most dramatic ways to impact the interior. Best of all, they come in thousands of colors and fabric combinations. Like floor mats, seat covers can be ordered with emblems or logos on them, giving consumers the ability to show off their team spirit or school pride.

For those who want a new look for the outside of their car or truck, consider a new grille, taillight surround, bumper, hitch, ground effects kit or other exterior product.

Wheels and tires, both of which are among the most popular vehicle accessories, instantly update the look of a car or truck. Prices, styles and finishes vary greatly, so your options really are unlimited.

If your vehicle is a few years old, you may want to consider modernizing with new mobile electronics. Bluetooth integration, navigation systems, video monitors and DVD players can all be installed in just about any car or truck, regardless of its age.

Don’t underestimate the impact that a good cleaning can have as well. Wax and car-care science has progressed to the point that there is a restoring program for almost any type of finish. Car-care companies have even designed power polishing tools that attach to any portable drill, so it takes less elbow-grease than ever to get professional results.

If your paint is damaged beyond hope, automotive paint companies offer a color palette far beyond the bland metallic treatments manufacturers usually use. Another option rapidly becoming popular is vinyl wrap, which looks like paint and applies like vinyl. It comes on rolls in a variety of colors and patterns, and when properly applied, does not damage the original surface. If you decide you want a change later on, simply peel it off and lay on a different wrap. It costs less than a custom paint job and the possibilities are endless.

Installing many types of restyling parts is designed to be simple, and can often be handled by anyone who approaches the job with reasonable care. But for best results, more involved makeovers — such as those that require paint or bodywork, or replacement of components that have safety-related features, such as seat assemblies — should be done by professionals who have the tools and experience for that kind of work.

To locate products or professional installers in your area, check www.enjoythedrive.com, a consumer site produced by SEMA. The site contains information about specific automotive specialty equipment and the latest products, as well as information about how to connect with qualified expert installers.

Spruce up your home for summer with cabinetry

Cabinet Finishes

Cabinet Finishes

(ARA) – With the dreary shadow of the economy looming, what better way to cheer your family’s mood and welcome in summer than by incorporating a creative color palette into your living room, bathroom or home office? With Americans spending more time at home these days, many are investing in home upgrades. Take a cue from Mother Nature and bring in functional and affordable cabinetry in surprising colors.

Designers are reporting increased demand from consumers for cabinets with painted finishes, according to the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence. Cabinet manufacturers are expanding finish options beyond the traditional brown and reddish tones to include bright and relaxing hues that create a summer retreat within your own home.

For example, Diamond Cabinets recently introduced several new cabinet finishes to its Inspired Collection, including a sunny, buttery yellow called Honeysuckle; a lagoon blue appropriately dubbed Oasis; a chameleon-like neutral, Portobello and Tidal Mist, which is reminiscent of foggy, ocean-front summer mornings. Other finishes in the collection include Moss — an earthy green — and Crimson, which emulates the look of summer berries.

Finishes from the Inspired Collection are also available with an heirloom technique, which creates a worn look around the cabinet edges, giving them a vintage feeling as though they have been open and closed for years.

The key is to have fun when incorporating a bright palette into your home. Pair colorful finishes with modern dark wood cabinetry to create a look that will be fresh for years. Use an unexpected hue for your laundry room cabinets to add a spark of personality in your space.

Sleek, versatile storage

The open, airy personality summer evokes can be easily mimicked throughout the home. For instance, an X-shaped Wine Cabinet is ideal for clearing bottles of your favorite summer wine selections off high-demand counter space. Its fluid design makes storing bottles of varying sizes a breeze. The X-shaped cabinet can be put to good use in other rooms of your home as well. Use it to neatly tuck away rolled-up towels in your bathroom; in your home office to store stationary or other small items; or in a playroom where it creates a compact home for children’s toys. Whatever your use, the sleek, open storage allows your personality to peek out without making your home look cluttered.

While you may enjoy quiet summer evenings listening to rustling tree branches and singing cicadas, you may feel the urge to grab your favorite summer tunes to liven up an afternoon barbeque or impromptu campfire. Find tunes easily with a smart CD/DVD Rollout Insert Cabinet, which allows you to smartly store your summertime favorites.

Incorporating cabinetry with playful colors and smart design into your home is a sure-fire way to invite the ease and excitement of summer living into your family’s life all year round.

Baby boomers should plan ahead for late-in-life care

Senior Legal Considerations

Senior Legal Considerations

(ARA) – Baby boomers rocked Woodstock, protested wars, rallied for civil rights and today have a solid reputation as professionals who work hard and play harder. But as record numbers of boomers continue to age, their health problems rise in direct proportion. If you’re a member of this generation and haven’t yet made decisions about your late-in-life health care, someone else could make them for you.

Without explicit, documented directions about how you want your health care and end-of-life issues handled, decisions about your care will fall to someone else if you become ill and are unable to make your wishes known. Having an advance care plan will give you peace of mind, secure in the knowledge that your health care choices will be respected, even if you can’t communicate them.

An advance care plan ensures your care is customized to reflect your personal preferences and health needs, as well as any social, cultural or religious requirements. The Heart Failure Society of America has compiled information to explain the benefits of advance care planning that is helpful not only for those with a chronic condition, such as heart failure, but for anyone planning ahead for the future.

Important terms to know when beginning advance care planning include:

Advance care directive:
This document provides clear evidence of your wishes regarding treatment and can include a living will, a durable health care power of attorney and a statement about organ donation.

Do-not-resuscitate order:
This directive made by you (or your family, in consultation with the doctor) tells doctors, nurses and rescue personnel what they should or should not do when a person stops breathing or when their heart stops. A DNR order can also include instructions on whether or not to use different methods to revive a person.

Living will:
This legal document allows a person who is unable to participate in decisions about their medical care to express their wishes about life-sustaining treatment. A living will is typically used during a terminal illness when a person is unable to communicate. Through it, you can set limits on what medical treatments — such as CPR, blood transfusions, surgery, kidney dialysis or other invasive measures — you will allow.

Health care power of attorney:
This document allows someone you designate to make all health care decisions for you in the event you’re unable to make them for yourself. This includes the decision to refuse life-sustaining treatment. You can give someone a general power of attorney or limit their decision making to certain issues by including instructions about your care.

Financial plan:
If you and your family have concerns about paying for medical care or hospital bills, a financial plan can help you work out the issues and provide for your family in the event of your death.

Talk to a health care professional about where to find further information about advance care planning as well as to discuss various health care options. You may also wish to consult a lawyer to help ensure your plan meets state legal requirements and your individual wishes. While it may be a difficult discussion, be sure your family knows and understands your wishes for care. Discussing the issues in advance will make implementing them easier should it become necessary.  This advice is even more important if your have parents or older relatives who have not yet taken these steps. Please share these ideas with those you love.

Saving Ideas

Saving Ideas

(ARA) – The economic health of the country is all over the news, and people everywhere are worried about layoffs, retirement savings and the state of their financial affairs. An unemployment rate above 8 percent has everyone looking over their shoulders and counting their pennies. If you’re worried about what to do if you lose your job or just looking for ways to save money, your first step should be to talk to your bank about how you can make the most of your banking relationship.

Here are some simple tips to help you make the most of your money and utilize all the financial tools available to you:

* Keep track of your money and every dollar you save with services like online banking and alerts. Banks offer alerts to help you prevent unnecessary fees and to give you added protection in case irregular account activity is detected on your account. Use online bill pay services wherever you can to help pay bills on time and avoid late fees.

* Look for easy ways to save. Bank of America’s Add It Up program is a free online shopping Web site that rewards customers with up to 20 percent cash back on everyday purchases. If you need to make a purchase, look online for good deals (that often come with free shipping). With the Add It Up program, when you pay with your Bank of America debit or credit card, you can track your savings online and get cash back to the account of your choice. Remember to use online price comparison sites to find savings as well.

“We’re here to help,” says Matt Boss, senior vice president, mass market customer segment for Bank of America. “We have several ways to help consumers get the most from their money — from innovative cash back programs like Add It Up to easy-to-use tools that show people how to keep track of every dollar.”

* If you’re in your 20s, 30s or 40s, hang tight. Keep making contributions to your 401(k) account and speak with your financial advisor about how to safely balance your investments. Keep in mind that you’re investing in retirement for the long term and try not to panic about day to day numbers or stock market fluctuations.

* If you do lose your job, talk to your bank right away to find out which customer assistance programs are available to you. For example, Bank of America will waive monthly maintenance fees and refund non-sufficient fund and overdraft fees if you lose your job.

* Take advantage of the services your bank offers like rolling over your IRA. The bank can help you maximize your investments at a time when you need it most.

“Especially now, when budgeting matters more than ever, your bank can provide immediate opportunities with saving and spending that really add up and assist customers in managing their finances in the long run,” says Boss.

During difficult financial times, your bank can be there to help. You can start by making a reasonable budget, sticking to it and taking advantage of the financial tools available to help you manage your finances.
